BINTULU, Mon: Today marks another milestone in Sarawak’s roadmap to increase its downstream activities in the O & G sector with the proposed setting up of Petronas’ additional gas sales facility at Tg Kidurong near here.
The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg today officiated at earth breaking ceremony of the Bintulu Additional Gas Facility (BAGSF 2) that would supply gas as feedstock to Sarawak Petchem ethanol plant at an adjacent site as well as to Sarawak Energy’s power plant in the vicinity.
As soon as the Premier arrived here earlier in the morning, he proceeded to a leading local hotel to participate in the annual dialogue between Sarawak Government and Petronas in fulfilment of the terms of the Commercial Settlement Agreement (CSA) signed between both parties in 2020.
Sited on a 70-hectare plot in Tg Kidurong BAGSF-2 is designed with a capacity to deliver up to 390 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd). It will deliver 160 MMscfd of natural gas to a Sarawak Government-owned methanol plant, another 70 MMscfd to Sarawak Energy Bhd’s Tanjung Kidurong Power plant and the remaining capacity would allow the facility to supply future customers, Petronas said in a press release.
The Premier pointed out that Sarawak recognized the importance of the O & G sector to its economic growth and described the project as the realization of the state’s own vehicle to venture into the O & G industry via Sarawak Petchem.
“I am confident that BAGSF-2 will further add value to Sarawak’s downstream business through realizing the operation of Sarawak Petchem as the major economic engine of growth for Sarawak in the next five to 10 years.
“We are progressing towards maximizing oil and gas sector’s contribution to the State’s economy. Here, ladies and gentlemen, we are witnessing BAGSF-2 as the enabler for Bintulu to be another petro-chemical hub in Malaysia. I strongly believe that there will be more collaboration as such with PETRONAS in support of Sarawak’s aspiration to be a developed State by 2030,” he said.
He reiterated that as Sarawak aspired to be a developed state by 2030 it was necessary for the state to double the size of its economy from RM 136 billion to RM 282 billion in 2030.
In order to achieve this, Sarawak economy needs to grow between 6 to 8% per annum until 2030. I am proud to share that Sarawak has outlined 7 Strategic Thrusts to accelerate economic growth after the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.
The Premier congratulated PETRONAS in achieving two arrangements in July 2022 with the collaboration between PETRONAS and SEDC Energy Sdn. Bhd. to accelerate the development and adoption of hydrogen and renewable oil as alternative fuels for the State.
The supply arrangement was signed between PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB) CEO, Dr. Mahpuzah Abai and SEDC Energy CEO, Robert Hardin, while joint technology collaboration arrangement was signed by Hardin and PETRONAS Chief Technology Office, Dr. Nasir Darman representing PRSB.
Datuk Tengku M Taufik Tengku Kamadjaja Aziz, Group CEO PETRONAS spoke earlier.
Also present were Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Professor Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary, Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh, Chairman of Petronas.
